Are there trails to hike? Is that a loaded questions. The town of Damascus is the town "where trails cross" for several great hiking trails: the Appalachian Trail, Iron Mountain Trail and The Virginia Creeper Trail. There are hundreds of miles of hiking trails in the area around Damascus and the Mount Rogers National Recreation area.
The Appaclachian Trail travels down the main street of Damascus which is one of the favorite spots for restocking, rest, and recharging for the weary through hiker. North from Damascus, the Appalachian Trail travels up over Whitetop Mtn and through Grayson Highlands State Park which is a fabulous getaway to see wild ponies, rhododendrons in bloom, or for blueberry picking.
Let's do not forget the many trails in Tennesse and North Carolina. There is great hiking from the Blue Ridge Parkway and Grandfather Mountain.
Please be prepared when you go hiking. Weather on the mountain changes without warning and a hot sunny day can quickly turn into a cold wet one. Check with the local backpacking outfitters for trail maps, trail conditions, water sources, and information.
